With his Ronin quartet at the heart of Bärtsch’s music, during his artists-in-residency at the Zurich jazz club Moods, in 2002 the Swiss artist evolved his creative expression into his octet band Ronin Rhythm Clan that exploded onto the new music scene with a freshness of voice and a dance-friendly beat. He has developed that exploration to his own genre called the Ritual Groove Music. At this Moods show, with his spare piano finesse augmented by his electric Fender Rhodes, Bärtsch directs his band into a blend of music that’s a mix of minimalist post-jazz fusion, the avant-garde, pure funk and cultural ritual grooves. He also comes up with a wonderful sonic palette playing prepared piano in a patient, intensely concentrated manner. The Clan features three horn players who explore the percussive structures of the leader’s compositions of interlocking rhythms. Positioned away from the horn trio and fronting the group is the marvelous bass clarinetist Sha who delivers idiosyncratic blats, slurs and gurgles. The set is a thrill of dancing, with a multi-colored horn drive. All dressed in black, the band ended the show and is called back for a full-groove encore. Highly recommended.
